Healthy Frozen Dog Treats – Recipes & Tips
The sun is shining and its holiday season. At the Woof Club we think that now is the perfect time to cool down our hot dogs with our home made frozen doggy treats!
They are quick & easy to make, they don’t cost much, and best of all, we havn’t found a dog who doesn’t LOVE them.
We always make two varieties, one low calorie version for our reluctant slimmer Molly ( watermelon & carrot) and one for Pupz who much prefers a more calorific cool snack. (soft fruit and yoghurt.).
We all have so much fun making & eating these! As long as you use dog safe fruits and unsweetened yoghurts, there is no end to the flavours of Pupsicles that you can create . Follow this link to our video blog where Anya will tell you about our two favourite recipes and give you step by step instructions on how to make them!
Remember, you don’t have to spend hours in the kitchen to make your dog’s day! Dog’s love savoury flavoured popsicles too. A simple homemade beef or chicken broth poured into a mould and frozen makes a very tasty cool treat for any hot pup ! They also adore simple ice cubes but please supervise your dog as these can present a choking hazard when fed whole.
Things you should know before feeding frozen treats to your dog.
We thought that it would be a good idea to share with you our answers to some questions that our customers ask us on this topic as follows;
Can my dog eat Ice?
The answer to this is yes! Dogs enjoy eating ice just as much as we do and it is good way for them to remain hydrated. However, as dogs tend to swallow things whole, it is advisable to give them crushed ice not whole pieces and supervise them at all times with any iced treats.
Are all popsicles safe for my dog?
The short answer is yes, as long as you are confident about the ingredients. This is why we always make our own with fresh, human grade ingredients. Most “shop bought” popsicles aren’t made with real fruit. They are often just a sweet mixture of various artificial ingredients that aren’t always healthy for dogs to eat.. Giving your dog a little bite now and again isn’t going to do much harm but it’s never a good idea to give your dog treats that contain artificial ingredients.
Shop bought popsicles also contain far too much sugar! Dogs don’t need additional sugar in their diets, as it can lead to serious health issues, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. However sugar free treats can be just as dangerous for your dog. These often include alternative artificial sweeteners like Xylitol, which are actually very toxic for dogs.
What fruits are bad for my dog?.
Steer clear of the following fruits;
- Cherries which are toxic for both cats and dogs.
- Grapes and raisins in large quantities can cause kidney damage.
- Citrus fruits like lemons, limes, and grapefruit can cause an upset stomach.
